Everything in the news over these last two days is about the shooting in Arizona on Saturday. One of the gifts of this extremely unfortunate situation is the national conversation that is arising. Everywhere people are talking about how we use language and how language can incite emotion and even action. I am deeply saddened that this event had to occur. However, I am encouraged that perhaps now there will be a conversation that takes us to another way of being with one another.
Our job is to see that this is not just another reactive conversation, but rather a conversation that leads to transformation and change. Notice what is being said around you. Hold a vision for debate and discourse that is civil and respectful. Hold a vision that allows us to disagree yet remain committed to finding a way forward.
