How to Succeed with your Vision, Project, or Goal

Bring to your awareness a vision, project, or goal, either from your personal life or related to your work. What wants to happen through that vision or project? What is the potential waiting to unfold?

Once you have identified the potential, begin by focusing your attention on your Thought. What do you think about this potential? What is the story you tell yourself about it? What does your intellect tell you? Make no judgment about what you discover. Just observe. What are your thoughts? (Click to read more)

In what ways are leadership skills different during accelerated change?

Such an interesting question. I believe that these times of accelerated change are actually calling us forth to higher levels of awareness as leaders. This is one of the great opportunities inherent within accelerated change—it causes us to grow and transform in ways that we might not have done otherwise, and at a rapid pace!

And so here we are in the second decade of the 21st century and change is happening at rates that no one could have ever imagined. We have no guidebook for where we are now in the world, and no real role models for leadership in that the world have ever been where we are now... (Click to read more)

What is the definition of a perfect leader in business?

First, the definition of  a “perfect” leader will vary depending on the situation. The definition of a leader depends on each situation, organization, and  where you are in your development as a leader.

However, in my writing, teaching, and speaking, I speak of several characteristics that are pretty universal for transformational leadership in today’s world. I speak of transformational leadership, because I believe we can no longer afford leadership that is only transactional in nature. Leadership today must be transformational... (Click to read more)

How do you become a leader in an industry without burning out?

The first thing that comes to mind here is to be clear about what feeds your soul. Yes, we all need things that feed our bank account, pay the mortgage, and support our families and a comfortable life. But if you keep that separate from what feeds your soul, you will be in trouble. Burning out can happen for many reasons, but certainly two significant ones are:

  1. because you forgot to keep some kind of balance in your life, so that life becomes mostly, if not completely, about work
  2. because you lost touch with what feeds your soul... (Click to read more)

What are the best ways for a boss to approach a difficult business conversation he or she has been avoiding?

The first step is to let go of what you think you know already about what needs to happen and what needs to be said, and then ask one of my favorite questions: What wants to happen here? In other words, if this situation is actually trying to give us a gift or is really an opening for a new level of potential to unfold, what might the gift be? What is the opportunity here?

If you will spend some time reflecting on that—really listening at an intuitive level—zooming out for a big picture view—you may discover that there is indeed a gift here, even if that gift is that now you have an opportunity to discuss something you’ve been avoiding for a long time. Listen to the situation itself and ask it what it wants you to know... (Click to read more)

What makes peacemaker specialists successful in an organization where power struggles have become commonplace?

If power struggles are commonplace, then the power struggles are just a symptom of something much larger. Great peacemaker specialists in these situations address the organization’s culture. Power struggles are rooted in fear of losing power. What each individual is defending in any particular struggle is rarely about the issue of the moment. There is something much deeper going on.

So successful peacemaker specialists in this circumstance recognize the bigger picture and listening to the greater potential that wants to unfold. If you are just focusing on making peace on the surface, then none of the real issues are being addressed. If, instead, you ask the energy of the common power struggles what it is trying to show you—what new ways of being together as a team or organization would indeed serve all of the stakeholders—then you are getting beneath the surface to the real issues...
